Who Filter
The who filter allows users to restrict the time use variable currently being created to those that occurred alone or with specified others. Users may also filter activities based on the presence of other people; distinctions can be made between whether ALL of the people must be present or ANY of the selected persons must be present. Users who specify "ALL" must note that only two present selections may be made because most surveys only allow the respondent to report two people who were with them during the activity.
The default selection is no specifications, meaning that the times spent in each of the selected activities (given other filter selections) are added together regardless of who was present during the activities.
The distinction between ANY and ALL refers specifically to the "Present" column of selections. For example, to analyze time spent in activities where both a spouse and household child were present, select ALL and "Present" for both "Spouse or partner" and "Child under 18." To analyze time spent in activities where either a spouse or child was present, select ANY and "Present" for both "Spouse or partner" and "Child under 18." When all other types of people are left at the system default (Does not matter), the system will return time spent in activities when either a spouse or an own household child (or both) was present regardless of who else also accompanied the respondent during the activity.
Users may also restrict the creation of time use variables to include only activities when specified types of people are present and other specified types of people are not present. Selecting "Not Present" for certain types of people adds another restriction to the creation of the time use variable; any persons marked as "Not present" must not be present during the activity for the duration of the activity to be used in the creation of the time use variable. To analyze time spent alone with a spouse/partner and not with anyone else, specify "Spouse or partner" as "Present" and all other types of people as "Not Present."
The system also allows users to distinguish between time spent with household children under 18 or under 5. For example, to analyze time spent with household children under 5, click the button next to "Child under 5" and specify this type of child as "Present."
At this point, the with whom filter is designed to meet the needs of most users. Those who are limited by the capabilities of the with whom feature may find the hierarchical data more suitable.
