Description
AGEYNGST reports the age of the respondent's youngest child, who may or may not be a household member.
More detailed information about the number of children under 18 years old in the household is available in UNDER18. Similarly, FAMSTAT summarizes the household composition of the respondents.
Comparability
In the 1975 and 1998 data, there were no 0 year olds in the data. Our assumption is that a value of 1 indicates that the youngest child is one or younger.
Users should also be aware that in 1985, a full household roster was not collected. Rather, respondents were asked to note how many people under 18 lived in the household as well as how many of them were under age 5. Therefore, in the AHTUS, if a respondent reported at least one child under age 5, AGEYNGST is assigned a value of 3. In cases where there was a child under 18 in the household but no child under 5, AGEYNGST is assigned a value of 9.
