Codes and Frequencies
Description
UNKNWP reports whether an unknown person is present with the respondent during the activity. In most years, this variable reports the presence of strangers or individuals who are not known to the respondents when they are not alone. For more information on how UNKNWP was coded in different years, please see the comparability section.
Users want more details about other presence may refer to HHADULT, CLSFAM, CHILD, INFANT, ANIMAL, COWORK, SPPART, WELLKNW, OTHERP, SHOPROF. The relationship between who variables is documented here.
UNKNWP is only available if you select a hierarchical extract. If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you.
Comparability
UNKNWP was created differently in some years. Users should take that into account in their analyses. This comparability documentation is adapted from the Oxford Harmonization files.
- 1965-66: If the respondents said they were not alone but INFANT, CHILD, SHOPROF, WELLKNW, and OTHERP are all not present, then this variable is coded as 1.
- 1998-01: If the respondents report the presence of strangers in the "who with" variables, this is coded as 1.
- 2003-present: If the respondents said they were not alone but the "who with" variable was blank, don't know, or refused to respond, this variable takes the value of 1.
